1. Das Buch gehört dem Mann. (The book belongs to the man.)
▶ To who belongs the book? To the man. - Dative case. The right answer is "dem", because the noun "der Mann" is of masculine gender.
2. Der Regenschirm der Frau ist Blau. (The woman's umbrella is blue.)
▶ Whose umbrella is blue? The woman's. - Genitive case. The right answer is „der“, because the noun „die Frau“ is of feminine gender.
3. Der Mann befiehlt dem Hund zu sitzen. (The man orders the dog si sit.)
▶ To who orders the man to sit? To the dog. - Dative case. The right answer is “dem”, because the noun “der Hund” is of masculine gender.
