   Das Verb

The verb is a flexible part of speech (it changes it's form) that expresses an action done by a noun or pronoun.

According to their functions there are three types of verbs:

1.   Auxiliary verbs used to express time:
- haben (to have)
- sein (to be)
- werden (to become)

With their help we can place an action in a certain time (present, past, future)

2.   Modal auxiliary verbs:
- können (can, to be able to)
- wollen (will, to want to)
- müssen (must, to have to)
- dürfen (may, to be allowed to)
- sollen (should, to be supposed to)
- mögen (to like, to wish to, to like to)

The modal verbs are almost always used together with another verb in the infinitive form, this is required to complete the meaning of a sentence.

*Auxiliary verbs are also called "Hilfsverben" (helping verbs)

3.   Predicative verbs: essen (to eat), schreiben (to write), lesen (to read), gehen (to walk), fahren (to drive/to travel) etc.

Predicative verbs can form on their own the predicate of a sentence.

Regarding their conjugation, german verbs are divided in two categories:

1.   regular (weak verbs) - this ones share the same conjugation rule

2.   irregular (strong verbs) - this ones have a special kind of conjugation procedure
